Illusory Truth Effect

Illusory Truth Effect

During our group presentations, each group presented a variety of interesting topics. However, one topic that captured my attention more than the other topics is the "Illusory Truth Effect." This can also be known as the validity or reiteration effect. We are always encountering misleading claims whether it be through news channels, social media or even advertisements. Many claims are known to be repetitive which makes it easier for people to believe and want to follow.

The Illusory truth effect is when one believes a lie because of the amount of times it has been repeated. The more it is repeated, the more believable the lie becomes. The Illusory Truth Effect makes it so easy for people out there to have access to the wrong kind of information. This is why it is important to follow reliable news sources, instead of believing everything you hear -- no matter how many times it has been repeated.

The science behind this effect is very interesting. Once your brain retains information a few times, then this makes it easier and quicker for your brain to respond to this kind of information. The brain actually misinterprets this information making you believe it is accurate. Sometimes you could get a gut feeling that something is true. This is due to the fact that something has been repeated so many times, where your body is able to react to it and tell your brain that the information you are hearing is correct.

Today, this form of manipulation is used in various different industries. It happens in politics more often than you'd think. Sometimes, this effect can happen in normal situations without being aware that it is happening. I think it is important to always make sure of the news you choose to believe, especially ensure the evidence supporting these claims. I think this is important for yourself, and for others since news goes around fast and you would not want to help in spreading it due to the fact that it is actually fake news.
